EncounterForge — frequently asked questions

How does this dnd encounter calculator determine difficulty?+

It adds the party's XP thresholds by character level, totals the monster XP, applies the selected ruleset's adjusted-XP handling, then compares the result against easy, medium, hard, and deadly bands.

Does it support the 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e rules?+

Yes. The free calculator includes the 2014 encounter-building rules. Pro unlocks 2024 encounter budgets, which use Low, Moderate, and High bands mapped here to Easy, Medium, and Hard, with a Deadly-style over-budget warning.

What is adjusted XP?+

Adjusted XP is the monster XP total after applying encounter-building multipliers. In the 2014 rules, more monsters can increase the adjusted XP; in the 2024 rules, monster XP is compared directly.

Is any campaign data sent to a server?+

No. Party levels, monster counts, XP values, and encounter notes are calculated entirely in your browser.
